Lianas reduce tropical tree recruitment, growth, survival, fecundity, and diversity -. At the community level, lianas appear to influence tree species composition by competing intensely with certain tree species, but not with others , -.
At the ecosystem level, lianas have the potential to substantially alter forest carbon, nutrient, and water dynamics by decreasing whole-forest carbon sequestration and storage, redistributing nutrients horizontally across the forest landscape, and reducing available soil moisture during seasonal droughts -. Determining landscape-level distributions and spatial patterns of lianas is essential to accurately predict the forest areas and processes on which lianas will have the greatest influence, to assess the community ecology of lianas, and to provide insights into the mechanisms that control liana species abundance and distribution within forests.
For example, a highly aggregated liana distribution would be consistent with the hypothesis that within-forest liana distribution is driven by treefall gaps , , and thus lianas would likely have a large effect on gap-phase regeneration, e. Many liana species colonize gaps primarily via stems that fall with the gap-making tree and then rapidly propagate through clonal reproduction , , , .

We assess whether the assumption that lianas have deep roots is corroborated by the literature. Deeper roots in lianas are not the single mechanism explaining liana success, due to limited empirical support. Instead, we propose that while liana success in seasonal forests may relate to deep roots for some species, it should not be viewed as the exclusive result of a single trait but as the possible result of multiple traits such as hydraulic redistribution, multifocal growing, drought resilience, higher water storage capacity, and acquisitive resource syndrome.
Additional hypotheses should be evaluated along with predicted changes in plant community structure. These hypotheses should stimulate research on the mechanisms driving liana success in tropical forests.

I have long-standing ethnographi I have long-standing ethnographic research interests in Borneo, and particularly Sarawak, East Malaysia, where I’ve worked since My PhD and early postdoctoral research centred on conversion to Christianity and ethnic and cultural politics among rural Bidayuh communities, while a second postdoctoral project entailed the study of landscape, morality and development in the context of a dam-construction and resettlement project in which four Bidayuh communities were entangled.
My fieldwork in Sarawak drew me to my current research interest: the social, political and affective dimensions of the global nexus of orangutan conservation in the so-called ‘age of the Anthropocene’. I’m exploring these through three main projects: 1 A digital ethnography of popular perceptions of orangutan causes and conservation on social media.
This project investigates the causes and contexts of orangutan killing in rural Borneo, with a view to using our ethnographic findings to inform conservation strategies for mitigating this problem and engaging more productively with local communities. This European Research Council-funded project has two key aims: to explore if and how global conservation is ‘scaling up’ to meet the challenges of ‘the Anthropocene’; and to cut ‘the Anthropocene’ down to size by examining how it is apprehended, fragmented and reworked in multiple ethnographic settings.
