Help us continue to fight human rights abuses. Please give now to support our work. Washington, DC — An armed group and affiliates fighting for control of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, appear to have used antipersonnel landmines and booby traps there in late May , Human Rights Watch said today. During the revolution against Muammar Gaddafi, General Hiftar pledged that armed forces under his command would never use landmines because the indiscriminate weapons cannot distinguish between fighters and civilians.
General Hiftar should publicly renew this pledge and instruct fighters under his command and foreign fighters supporting the LAAF to stop using landmines and destroy any stocks in their possession, Human Rights Watch said.

BENGHAZI, Libya — Libyan militia fighters assaulted a hotel in Tripoli housing members of the newly elected General National Congress on Tuesday, dramatizing the challenge the government faces in enforcing its ultimatum that all unauthorized brigades must submit to its authority or disband by the start of the day. The attack came as an American team arrived in Tripoli to investigate the death of Ambassador J.
Christopher Stevens in an assault this month on the American Mission in Benghazi. Libyans who had spoken with the team said the investigators had reached Tripoli, but it was unclear when they might proceed to Benghazi, where security for American government officials is precarious.

Libya, a mostly desert and oil-rich country with an ancient history, has more recently been known for the year rule of the mercurial Colonel Muammar Gaddafi – and the chaos that has followed his departure. Tripoli Trablos , 85 kilometers north of Beirut, has its own special character thanks to its historical wealth, relaxed lifestyle and thriving business climate, this is a city where modern and medieval blend easily into a lively and hospitable metropolis. Known as the capital of the North, Tripoli is Lebanon’s second largest city.
Forty-five buildings in the city, many dating from the 14th century, have been registered as historical sites. Twelve mosques from Mamluke and Ottoman times have survived along with an equal number of “madrassas” or theological schools. Secular buildings include the “hammam” or the bathing-house, which followed the classical pattern of Roman-Byzantine baths, and the “khan” or caravansary.
We started our visit in Tripoli here, early in the morning. It was amazing! The fortress is almost intact, it is a pleasure walking through different part of it. The citadel dominates over the city as it was built at the hill. The views are stunningly. You can see how dense the population of the city is, there is a building by building. I definitely recommend visiting the fortress. After being stuck in traffic for some time we arrived just 30 minutes before closing and were allowed to enter the picturesque Citadel free of charge to have a quick look and take some beautiful pictures.
Free parking along the street. Highly recommended! Although the citadel was partly occupied by the military with their three tanks parked outside, there was plenty to see of the Castle with at least two towers dating back to the Crusades. The museum is well laid out with very interesting information.
